Shirley I. Menges, 82, of Lewis Twp., Watsontown, passed away peacefully Friday, June 27, 2025, at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville.
Born January 2, 1943, in Lewis Township, Northumberland County, she was a daughter of the late Allen L. and Ruth (Rice) St. Clair. On March 31, 1962, she married Theodore R. “Ted” Menges and together they celebrated 63 years of marriage.
Shirley was a graduate of Warrior Run High School, and later worked as a teacher’s aide in the district for 16 years. She went back to school at age 43, earning her bachelors degree from Bloomsburg University. She proceeded to teach fifth grade at White Deer Elementary for Milton Area School District until her retirement in 2005.
She was a former member of Trinity United Church of Christ, Turbotville. As a current member of Zion Lutheran Church, Turbotville, she was very active including children’s choir director, member of the adult and bell choirs, lector, stewardship committee and disaster relief team. Shirley was also a life member of Warrior Run-Fort Freeland Heritage Society, and often helped with the food demonstrations during Heritage Days.
Shirley enjoyed gardening both flowers and vegetables, crocheting, fishing, camping in their motor home and traveling. Ted and Shirley liked spending time at the cabin at Elk Run Hunting Club. Most of all she loved spoiling her grandchildren and spending time with the entire family, especially hosting Thanksgiving meals.
In addition to her husband Ted, she is survived by two sons: Brian (John Ellis) Menges, of Florida, and John (Karen) Menges, of Arendtsville; one daughter: Rachel L. Menges, of Florida; two grandchildren: Hannah and Joseph Menges; one brother: John (Barb) St. Clair; and two sisters: Mary Mertz and Ileen Ranck.
Besides her parents she was preceded in death by her children, Michael and Rebecca.
There will be a viewing held from 9 to 11 AM on Thursday, July 3, at Zion Lutheran Church, 39 Paradise Street, Turbotville, where a funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM with her pastor, Rev. Erwin C. Roux, officiating. Burial will follow in Presbyterian Cemetery, McEwensville.
