Betty Jane (Smith) Heffner

Betty Jane Heffner, 101 of Washingtonville, passed away Tuesday, August 20, 2024 at Buffalo Valley Lutheran Village.

Born March 13, 1923 in Ottawa, Montour County, she was the daughter of the late Emerson C., Sr. and Ruth (Rishel) Smith.  She was married to Emerson C. Heffner for 34 years until his death in 1977.

Betty was a graduate of the former Turbotville High School and had attended Lycoming College for three years.  She and her husband spent time in Mississippi where he was stationed during WWII.  After returning to Washingtonville, she was employed at Danville School District as a dietitian.

She was a member of Washingtonville Lutheran Church, manager of the Washingtonville Senior Center, and a life member of the Order of the Eastern Star.  She enjoyed her country life, mowing her lawn, and traveling with her family.

Surviving are a son and daughter:  Emerson "Butch" Heffner of Washingtonville and Judy Moore of Sayre; two grandchildren: Sara Jane Moore-Kaplan and Todd E. Moore; a great-granddaughter: Laine Violet Kaplan;  four nieces: Linda Sue, Caren, Karla, and Carol and a nephew, Tom.

Preceding her in death besides her parents and husband was a brother, Emerson C. Smith, Jr. and a sister, Evelyn Finch.

Family and friends are invited to a graveside service to be held Saturday, August 24, 2024 at 11:00 AM at Washingtonville Lutheran Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions in her memory may be made to a charity of your choice.
