Linton graduated from Gordon College with a BS in Chemistry. Followed by a MA in Chemistry from Boston University (BU) in 1973. While at BU he was a teaching and research assistant.
Linton was active in Boy Scouts and later as a leader. He was very active in the churches he attended, helping with the youth and serving as church treasurer, deacon and elder at various times. He supported himself and his family as an analytical inorganic chemist in the field of precious metals.
